Newport: where the Transporter Bridge is considered scenery, the rain is largely horizontal, and everyone knows someone who once had a fight outside a pub that no longer exists. It’s rough round the edges, suspicious of anything described as “artisan”, and has produced generations of people perfectly capable of surviving on chips, sarcasm and an unreasonable amount of local pride. You can leave Newport, obviously. People do. They just spend the next twenty years telling everyone they’re from Newport.
